A few weeks ago, Shani worked all weekend. I bucked down, put in two 10-hour days, and finished the second draft of the book I’m working on: Taking the Brick.

Here’s a shot of my workspace. You’ll notice the microphone. I actually read each chapter out loud and listen to it. It really helps me nail down the prose. (Although sometimes the dog barks in the middle of a recording and I swear a lot).

The plan now is to give it to two new reader groups. I need fresh eyes. Then once that’s done, I’m in the home stretch. (Actually, I’ll need help doing an error check in a couple months — so let me know if you’re into that.)

If you’re interested in reading the book, I’d love that. I suppose if you’re here, so like my writing. So that probably means you’ll like the book. In fact, you can PREORDER it now and when’ it’s ready, an autographed copy will come right to your door. (But fair warning — it isn’t going to be ready for 4-6 months.)

In the meantime, here is a sneak peek at a Chapter called “W”. One the character’s car breaks down and he ends up walking across Los Angeles. He faces rodents, homeless people, cops, and his own bare feet — but what an adventure. It’s been one the favorite chapters.

If you want to listen to it:

Or you can read it:

Here is a synopsis of the book:

1993 Los Angeles. Superguy arrives fresh from college and ready for the liberation and excitement of adulthood. But instead of life with the beautiful people, he finds himself stuck among an assortment of misfits.

Taking the Brick tells a story about finding your way in the world and finding your people. It’s about freedom and fear, and above all, a time when your friends are your family.

For readers who have been there, this book is a joyful journey of powerful nostalgia. For readers heading into this time of their life, this book helps pave the way for a world to come. Taking the Brick delivers unforgettable characters and page-turning action to create a book that has become a rite of passage.

And finally, as promised, here is some life updates:

  • JACK is currently at Mardi Gras in Louisiana and having a blast.
  • SHANI is celebrating a birthday soon, so be sure to wish her happy birthday if you know what’s good for you.
  • ALEX got a tattoo. (Obviously to show off his massive biceps.)

OH! Here’s a copy of the working cover for the book!

Quote of the week

“These agents, and the President who sent them, are no one’s heroes, no one’s saviors — just men with guns who have to hide their faces to shoot a mom in the face and a nurse in the back.”
