Ode to Captain America and the Border Collie

This one is gonna be a mess, but whatever.

My favorite scene from all the Marvel movies is from Infinity War. The Black Order have ambushed Vision and Scarlet Witch, and the two of them are in big trouble. Here’s the shot.

But then, they spot something across the train platform. Out of nowhere, Captain America, is there to save the day.

But my favorite part isn’t just Cap coming and saving them. My favorite thing is the look of relief on the faces of Vision and Scarlet Witch.

I mean, those two are WAY more powerful than Cap, but the fact that Cap is there…it means they’re safe. Even to superheroes, he’s their hero.

So, hold that thought as we go to current events.

Obviously, the election did not go the way I’d hoped. And in all honesty, I haven’t figured out how to feel or what to do about it. I think a lot of people feel that way. What’s next?

My wife, Shani, is in the same boat. In 2016, she snapped into action, marching, organizing, advocating…she worked relentlessly.

But this time? Not sure yet. For some reason it’s not the same. Different emotions. Different climate, I suppose.

This week, Shani got a group of women together. Not with any purpose, just to be together. And they’re going to make it a regular thing. Shani and I have talked at length about why she’s doing it and what the purpose is. And she doesn’t really know; she’s just going on instinct. Her friend, Julie, said Shani was a “border collie,” which I thought was pretty funny.

But today something profound struck me. And it was honest-to-God like the Captain American moment for me. What struck me was so simple, but it hit me hard.

Shani has not given up.

My wife has not given up.

She doesn’t know what to do and she doesn’t have a plan. But there she is. In motion. In action. Undaunted, dammit.

Thank God.

Oooh! And it just hit me – if Shani is Captain America, then I’m Peggy Carter. That’s very cool! Agent Carter – hell yes.

OK…I promised this one would be a mess and I was right. And if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to write a letter to incoming Congresswoman Sarah McBride. If you don’t know who she is, look her up. She’s in for a hell of a fight and she’s gonna need support for sure.

Here’s a link to the full Captain American scene. It’ll give you goose bumps.
